In the previous two weeks, two incidents of ‘inebriated urination’ by passengers have been recorded on Air India flights

Two surprising incidents involving drunk and unruly passengers on Air India flights have been reported previously two weeks. The most up-to-date one was when an inebriated passenger urinated on the blanket of a feminine co-passenger. The incident occurred on December 6, 2022, on Air India Flight 142 from Paris to Delhi.

Earlier, an identical incident happened on November 26 on an Air India flight when a drunk man relieved himself on an aged lady in enterprise class on a flight from New York to Delhi.

In the context of the sooner incident on November 26, on Wednesday, Air India introduced that it had banned the accused Mumbai man from flying with the airline for the following 30 days. But what are the authorities’ and governments’ punishment programs for such misconduct?

Let us take a look at the punishment provisions that India and different nations have for such unruly and drunk passengers for their misbehaviour or acts of violence.

INDIA

Punishment as per the National No-Fly List-

  • For unruly bodily gestures, verbal harassment, and unruly inebriation: ban as much as three months.
  • For bodily abusive behaviour: ban as much as six months.
  • Life-threatening behaviour, assaults, injury to plane programs, and many others: ban lasts at the least two years and could be prolonged indefinitely.

USA

Penalty as per the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-

  • For drunk passengers, abusing and bodily assaulting flight crews and travellers: Penalty of $37,000 and imprisonment.

UK

Punishments as per the UK Civil Aviation Authority-

  • Acts of drunkenness: a most high quality of £5,000 and two years’ imprisonment.
  • For endangering the protection of an plane: as much as 5 years of imprisonment.
  • For diversion: prices sometimes vary from £10,000-£80,000 relying on the scale of the plane and the place it diverts to.

CHINA

Punishments as per the Republic of China Civil Aviation Law-

  • People concerned in brawls at airports or on flights, or who assault check-in employees or air crews: ban on boarding any airplane for a 12 months.
  • If violations are severe: high quality as much as 50,000 yuan and should face prison prices.

SINGAPORE

Punishments as per Singapore’s Hijacking of Aircraft and Protection of Aircraft and International Airports Act-

  • Guilty of a risk to hijack or endanger the protection of the plane or the realm: high quality as much as S$500,000 or jail for as much as 10 years, or each.
  • Threatening, offensive, insulting, or disorderly method in the direction of a crew member: high quality as much as S$100,000 or jail for as much as 5 years, or each.

SOUTH KOREA

Punishments as per South Korean Aviation Law-

  • To threaten the pilot and crew throughout flight: a five-year jail time period or a high quality of 50 million received.
  • Drunken passengers who injure different passengers: a high quality of 10 million received.
  • The crew members hand over violators to the police after touchdown.
