Congress chief P Chidambaram on Wednesday claimed that the Union Budget has “betrayed” the hopes of a vast majority of Indians and shows how far removed the government is from the people and their concerns about life, livelihood and the growing inequality between the rich and the poor.
At a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, the former finance minister termed the budget as “callous” and mentioned Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has not talked about the phrases unemployment, poverty, inequality or fairness wherever in her Budget speech “Let me start by stating, with remorse, that the FM has not talked about the phrases unemployment, poverty, inequality or fairness wherever in her speech. Mercifully, she has talked about the phrase poor twice in her speech. I’m certain the individuals of India will take be aware of who’re within the issues of the federal government and who are usually not,” Chidambaram mentioned.
He burdened that no taxes have been lowered apart from the small quantity who’ve opted for the brand new tax regime.
“No indirect taxes have been reduced. There is no cut in the cruel and irrational GST rates. There is no reduction in the prices of petrol, diesel, cement, fertilizers etc. There is no cut in the numerous surcharges and cesses which are, anyway, not shared with the state governments,” Chidambaram mentioned.
“Who has benefited by this Budget? Certainly, not the poor. Not the youth wanting desperately for jobs. Not those that have been laid off. Not the majority of the taxpayers. Not the homemaker. Not the considering Indians who’re shocked by the rising inequality, the rise of the quantity of billionaires and the wealth being collected within the arms of the 1 per cent of the inhabitants. Certainly, not you,” he said.
Chidambaram alleged that the government is determined to push the fortunes of “gift city”, Ahmedabad, on the price of different industrial and monetary centres.
“The authorities can also be decided to push the ‘new’ tax regime for which there are few takers for a spread of causes.
“Besides, making the brand new tax regime the default possibility is grossly unfair and can rob the abnormal tax payer of the meagre social safety that he could get below the previous tax regime,” the Congress leader said.
This is a “callous” Budget that has betrayed the hopes of the overwhelming majority of the individuals, he added.
