An inmate from a jail in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district allegedly despatched a menace letter to a Raigarh-based metal plant of industrialist and former Congress MP Naveen Jindal demanding Rs 50 crore from him, police stated on Tuesday.

The letter was delivered by submit on the Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) manufacturing facility in Patrapali village final week, a police official stated.

It carried a requirement of Rs 50 crore from the businessman with a warning of dire penalties if the cash was not paid inside 48 hours, he stated.

An investigation revealed the letter was written by an inmate of Bilaspur central jail following which the Kotra Road police on Monday booked him beneath Indian Penal Code Sections 386 (extortion by placing an individual in concern of loss of life or grievous damage) and 506 (prison intimidation), the official stated.

Further investigation was underway, he added.
